I have been wondering for a while about a "Linux [1] Expo" for Chch. I mean a professional thing with proper displays, papers, experts, an important overseas visitor as keynote speaker, whatever.
We would REALLY need the pros in chch and wider nz there. They are about.
You'll need to be quite specific about what you want. I work in the Health industry where linux installs
are rather common, where i get called in to fix some of the stickier problems (aside from being a programmer
and a project admin). It's difficult to imagine the people i work with being remotely interested in an expo, they
look at this stuff all day.
And serious money and time committment are involved.
or maybe something smaller, a more community based expo, concentrating on home & school use? in a community group rather than the convention centre :-/
Part of this desire comes from the pressure we come under at installfest time to do some demonstrations/showing off, when the day is far too busy to do that. However I am not looking for something where each of us brings our home machine and demonstrates that they can play quake/dvds/compile a kernel in 20 seconds. the thing needs a theme.
perhaps "Linux [1] in Home and Schools"
As far as homes are concerned, we need to show off multimedia capabilities.
Schools are driven by costs (& politics), homes to a certain extent by the gee whiz
factor. We need gee whiz.
sorry if this is disjointed, its a bit of a stream of unconsciousness.
ditto.
