My solution to this problem with a KDE desktop on Mandrake 10 is as follows;
Right click on your desktop, from the pop up menu; Create New -> File -> Link to Application In the dialog box which appears click on the Application tab. In the Command text box place the following text; /usr/bin/kdesu -c 'kfmclient openProfile filemanagement' Note the single quotes. Other properties such as desktop icon and name may be adjusted to suit. To operate double click on the desktop icon. A dialog box appears prompting you for the root password. The Konqueror file manager window then appears with root permissions. If you wish to edit a file as root all you need to do is right click it and choose your editor from the pop up menu.
