Right  cool - I have a nvidia card in this machine, and glx is definitely
on.

I'll report back this afternoon on progress.

The absence of error messages :-)

krootview and kdmgreet crash when I try to log in with kdm, if I don't 
have the GLX module specified in XF86Config-4. Google hits seem to 
indicate that there is a strong link to the nvidia driver here. I 
haven't tried the 'nv' driver, nor gdm/xdm.

When I get more time, I'll try some options ... :-)
