Right cool - I have a nvidia card in this machine, and glx is definitely on.

Google hits seem to indicate that there is a strong link to the nvidia driver here. I haven't tried the 'nv' driver, nor gdm/xdm. When I get more time, I'll try some options ... :-) -jim
