Yep. Airport is 802.11b and the Extreme is 802.11g. They have incompatible connectors (at least the cards do). So Extreme is the only option for new laptops.

The non-extreme one works fine, but AFAIK the Extreme ones don't work at all under Linux. Would be great if they did coz then I wouldn't have to plug in that old fashioned cable thingy when using my iBook under Linux (it works fine under OSX of course). When I bought the iBook I tried to get the non-extreme card but since the connectors are different it wouldn't have been much use.
Now the Airport Express (http://www.apple.co.nz/hardware/airportexpress/), that's cool :-).
