Well, it works, and I now have a ppp0 interface. The documentation is
sparse, but enough to get me going. Next step- XP.

IIRC windows in various versions had a thing called "direct cable
connect", which might have been an ms way of saying "serial cable ppp".
Also these things tend to be different between "consumer" versions of
windows and "server" *cough splutter* versions. I'm sure there have been
various ppp servers in there over the ages - quite what XP offers is
something you may need to dig around for.
is still in XP - just use the wizard in network connections to create an
"advanced connection", can choose guest or host (ie client or server)
and type of port. you may need to log on with an account with
administrative privileges to get all options.
