You're talking about 2 different things here: 1) General system administration. On SuSE, yast will get you a very long way and is pretty simple. Webmin is there too, but I think it may be a bit risky as it may conflict with yast in some areas. 2) File sharing with windows, which practically means using samba. yast can configure samba clients and servers, to what extent has to be seen. I don't see a problem with you bringing in your machine if there's time, which by the looks of it there will be.
