Those modems don't have an open source Linux driver AFAIK.
We got Warwick's modem going with the Linuxant free 14K kernel-specific
driver, under Mandrake 10, from Installfest. He's been considering
paying the US$15 for the unlock code, and there may be a SuSE version by
now too..
Options are:
1) See what the installer recognises.
2) Ignore there's a modem in the computer.
3) Buy a new modem at DSE or tastech.co.nz which has a supported
chipset, around $30.
..or he might obtain an external ($85 at Computer Broker, + discount if
he mentions Linux Installfest), which I have recommended.
SuSE 9.1 has these driver packages:
hsflinmodem Driver utilities for Conexant HSF softmodems
km_hsflinmodem Source Code Package for the Conexant HSF Softmodem Driver
km_smartlink-softmodem Package for Building the SmarLink Modules in k_deflt and
k_athlon
ltmodem Driver for modems with lucent chipsets
smartlink-softmodem Smart Link Soft Modem for Linux
This suggests some conexants may be supported. The safest is probably
lucent. I can't find the intel 536ep driver - perhaps the driver is no
longer shipped by SuSE (strange, but some manufacturers don't allow
driver redistribution, doh), or there's an alternative, or the driver
simply didn't work on 2.6 kernels at distro release date. Personally I
have a strong dislike for hardware from suppliers which waste my time
dealing with drivers for their crap, but that's digressing. I'm happy
with whatever option Warwick chooses. As usual - we'll see what happens
:)
