I have set up an old pentium 166 as a fax server for the office (gentoo with hylafax) I installed from the binaries from the latest gentoo version.
Went to update the system and lo and behold there is an update to glibc. It takes ages to compile (even with distcc help from far more powerfule machines) and craps out due to lack of memory (64M RAM plus 128M swap). Bugger. Hmmm no spare partitions to make more swap space. double bugger. intense thought for a while, then realised thats easily fixed, a quick make of a file with dd, then mkswap and swapon and I have another 64M of swapspace. Hopefully it will work now. you gotta love the flexibility you can get from linux, not even a reboot while significantly revamping the swap space. Nice!
