Eh, well, actually most of the performance is getting _worse_ with all
of the compiler options and other junk that many Gentoo users through
into their system configuration without understanding what they're
doing.
In cases like this, though, Gentoo _does_ make it easier to build
package with specific options enabled that would otherwise be
unavailable in an official package from another distribution.
Of course, there might often be a good reason why the option is disabled
in other distributions...

Indeed. It's a fair amount of effort to customise Debian packages,
build them from source, and keep them up-to-date, but if it's only
required for a specific package then it's not likely to be a huge
problem--it's certainly not so difficult that it becomes worth changing
distributions.
