Welcome to the list, Jayne.
Newbies are certainly welcome, subject to a few issues of list etiquette:
1. Always spend an hour searching on Google before posting a request for help. People do get irritated when Google puts the answer to your question at the top of the list.
2. Turn off html in your mail client (your email was in html). A lot of list members read their email in plain-text clients, like mutt, and find all the clutter of html emails annoying. If you're using Thunderbird or Mozilla, you want Tools, Account Settings, Composition and Addressing, Don's Compose messages in HTML format.
3. When people post replies to your questions, give their suggestions a genuine crack before posting more questions. When I do this, it might be several days before I have a chance to try things, and reply back to the list. That's normal.
4. Learn where to find the documentation for your distro, and read that first. What distribution are you using? I'm using Debian, so the order that I look up the documentation on my own machine is:
a. Gnome system admin help b. Debian reference c. Rute user's guide
Both the Debian reference and Rute had to be installed voluntarily. Mandrake has a good command-line reference, if you're using that distro.

I joined this list a few days ago and thought I should stop “lurking” and say hello.
I’m a total newbie so is it ok for me to join in here or is this list just for people who know what they’re talking about? Don’t want to brass anyone off when I start asking basic questions.
Thanks
