I liken linux to the tiptronic gearbox in my car.

in one mode (gui-X) i put it in automatic and i have a finely tuned 5
speed automatic that is damned good at what it does.

in the other mode (console) I can manually change gear to my heart's
content, and the car makes no assumptions for me (except it does prevent
me from changing into first at 120 km/h).
