I don't know for sure but check whether your character devices (in /dev) have 
changed location etc under the new kernel.

If you find out the reason, let us know.

Xandros must have one as it autodetects the modem and sets it up correctly 
(with the 2.4 kernel though) - but I don't know what it is as it is called by 
the 1st run wizard.
