My laptop has one serial port.  I am running Debian 3.0 (Woody).  I have a 
PCMCIA modem that appears as ttyS4 when the driver loads, and there is a 
symbolic link from /dev/modem to /dev/ttyS4

I expect I could make the PCMCIA modem appear as any ttySx port, but ttyS4 
seems to be the default and I have no reason to change it.
