My laptop has one serial port. I am running Debian 3.0 (Woody). I have a PCMCIA modem that appears as ttyS4 when the driver loads, and there is a symbolic link from /dev/modem to /dev/ttyS4 I expect I could make the PCMCIA modem appear as any ttySx port, but ttyS4 seems to be the default and I have no reason to change it.
