That'll be it - I'm still running 2.4.26 (or the like - can't remember), as I have yet to get the modem running with 2.6 (position 263 on the list of things to do).

well it depends what kernel you are running, that is an old article
about an old kernel. the device id's are certainly in recent 2.6 series.
I looked.

Thanks Nick.

There's an article in there about getting things going with the P8:

DSCP8 works ok with Slackware 9.0 and kernel 2.4.20. I could sucessfully recognize a sony model DSCp8 as sda1 mouting it as a scsi removabledisk in /mnt/camera. But it was not very easy, it was necessary to reconpile the module usb-storage.o The steps I took are: 1. edit the file /usr/src/linux/drivers/usb/storage/unusual_devs.h 2. find the line: UNUSUAL_DEV( 0x054c, 0x0010, 0x0106, 0x0422, Sony, DSC S30/S70/S75/505V/F505/F707 3. change the last entry 0x422 to 0x450 note that this correction worked for this kernel version, but may not work for other versions and distros, in older versions the same entry was changed from 0x210 to 0x322. 4. Recompile and install the module.

This might explain why I was unable to mount the P8 as mass storage. I'll take another look, and report back.

Douglas.

or look at the usb device database at http://www.qbik.ch , which seems
to confirm it will work as a usb-storage device, in other words like a
plugin usb flash drive.

I cheerfully plugged my sister-in-law's DSC-P8 (http://www.dpreview.com/news/0302/03022405sonyp8p10.asp) into my box, confidently expecting to download snaps the way I do from my own Canon S45.

I have since discovered that the P8 is not supported (http://gphoto.org/proj/libgphoto2/support.php), which seems a bit of an oversight.

What to do?
