My son (or anyone with the skills, suppliers and inclination) can build you
a pretty good new machine for less than $1500

Linux software is no problem. Distro recommendation would depend on your
level of skill, internet connection type and any personal choice.

I would recommend SuSE for a newbie.

Hi All,
I'm not sure if an intro of myself is appropriate here so I haven't
written one :)
Here's my question - I was planning to lurk longer before making a
posting but having just moved to ChCh from England I'm looking to buy a
desktop. I've tried buy/sell/exchange, dell ( well priced but 10-12
days delivery ) and a couple of local stores ( relatively overpriced? )
and have got nothing so far. I thought you all may have more ideas on
where I can get something. It doesn't need to be flash, but I would like
80Gb+ hard drive space, which I can buy separately/expand if needed, and
something that I can run a full windowing gui on.
I am also looking for some flavour of Linux, I've kind of lost touch

with it as I have been travelling for the past few years - basically I
want to: run LAMP, play music and have the potential to watch films if I
ever fork out for a DVD player. I would also like my 'not interested in
Linux at all' partner to be able to use it so Gnome or whatever is
definitely needed. Is there a flavour of choice among the group? Would
anyone be able to make me a copy - which I would cover the costs of?
Finally - can I attend the AGM?

Many thanks and sorry for the long mail,

        Andy
