At home I built a Linux box with an 800MHz mini-ITX motherboard- it's great 
as a server and small with low power consumption.  Underpowered for some 
tasks, perhaps.

You can pick up Linux discs from many people on this list- once you have 
decided which flavour you want.  ECafe in town (in the Arts Centre) will 
also burn a distro of your choice for few New Zealand coins.
