they should look up the depreciation rates that the IRD allows, they are
very realistic these days.

computers are depreciable 36% per annum straight line. that means a $2k
computer is worth:

end of year one: $1280  (depreciation .36* 2,000 = $720)
end of year two:  $560  (depreciation is the same)
end of year three $written off. (depreciation is the same and is greater
than residual value)

alternatively you can use 48% diminishing value:

end of Y1: $1040 (dep= .48 * 2,000 = $960)
end of Y2: $ 541 (dep = .48 * 1040 = $499)
end of Y3: $ 281 (dep = .48 * $541 = $260)

as i say the IRD presently allows you to depreciate things at very
realistic rates, so that should give you some guidance as to the very
real cost of owning a computer. yourestimate of 1/4 the price after two
years is basiaclly correct on those figures ($560 on straight line, $541
on DV)
