This presents good, philosophical questions.

..What, and you aren't making money from Linux skills?
If Linux disappeared from the world tomorrow, I would still be writing Java code. You wouldn't have a job. You rely on Linux, I don't. But that's beside the point.
I don't think so. It is useful, thanks Carl.
Firstly, it's hypothetical - and as such, normally wasteful of PC/mental processor cycles.
But secondly, _we_ don't rely on Linux. I support computer users (mostly WinXX), including computer training. Where these point (people) towards Linux, well & good, because Linux is the future (especially if I can help make it so). In other words, WinXX is the engine for Linux. Your own occupation and hobby mix mirrors that equation. Nick Rout's Win98 office similarly, iirc, bears this out. And this also explains why C*LUG is so tied up in itself - myopic, one-eyed *nixism can get us nowhere.
If making money from Linux becomes your primary motivation for being in the CLUG group, (and I'm not saying it is),
It is a worthwhile (& efficient) aim to become a *nix professional, agreeing with Zane.
then your involvement could be seen as merely (ab)using the group for your own ends (and I'm not saying this is true, either). Just a possibility.
I hope it is not, and need to be told if so.
And I thought you were the best programmer we had.
Hah! I wish.
Well, you read as the theoretical brains behind it, for sure - the 'minister of propaganda' (? :)
certainly our history-bearer
..whereas Nick is the 'ringmaster' of this particular circus
- read that as you must ;)
Cheers, Carl.
