Ah, en_GB is aliased to en_GB.ISO8859-1 in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/locale.alias But none of the combinations which produce a degree in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/iso8859-1/Compose are shown by dumpkeys. dumpkeys doesn't show any combination which gives a degree. Is dumpkeys even for X11? Because loadkeys seems to be only for the consoles. I dislike all this key stuff...
