Somewhere in the thread I read something about slmodem, which is the driver I had to use with my toshiba.
I'll post more details when I check it out at home. However there are two different drivers, slmodem and slmdm. IIRC one is for 2.4 kernels, one is for 2.6. Also, if one of these releases works, you may find it flakey. From memory my particular modem only worked well 2 or 3 releases back from the latest.
I'll check out my config tonight at home & see what I have setup.
Cheers Brad

How to network Linux (ubuntu) and Windows (XP)...?
You will need to get ( borrow or buy ) a network switch / hub and cables, or a single crossover cable.
Is Samba packaged with ubuntu Linux...?
It appears to be. Look in the Ubuntu menus and you will find 'Networking'...
On the other hand it is probably simpler to use the Win. utility called 'putty' to copy the file over to the Linux machine. Ubuntu appears to have the ssh utilities.
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html Download this onto the windows machine to move the file.
Alternatively just boot the Win. box with a Linux LiveCD and use the ssh facilities therein.
