My Ubuntu/Gnome dialup works like this..

use the modem lights applet, like the article that i pointed you to
suggested.

I have this running permanently on the taskbar, but only to tell me when the modem is working. Dialing & hanging up don't work from there.

First you have to go to the Networking admin tool (I think that name's correct) from the 'start' button menu tree - you know what I mean (I can boot Ubuntu for more terminological accuracy if you get lost..).

In there are the network card settings (eth0, IP address etc), and the modem/ppp.

Tell us if you can find your modem there, and set it up to dial your ISP (login & password etc).

Once that's done, you "Activate" the modem to dial. Mine even sounds the dialtones as a clue. It's necessary to "Deactivate" to hang up.

Good morning! Yes, it's nice if questions are answered... ;) This would
indeed be good to figure/configure... with help, of course. Still don't
know why the dial-up GUI won't work... :$ How-to figure configure that
issue...? And how does one figure/configure things like the mouse
buttons (middle scroll button, etc.) and application launch buttons on a
laptop? Obviously requires the right drivers... :$ Gets a bit
trippy... :@ Have a good day... and thanks for the help!

I was just googling for a way to incorporate wvdial and the gnome "modem
