ctr-alt-f1 about the same time it's throwing the kde errors at you.
When you say "cursor" what does it look like?
Along the lines of...
08:35 tjpick:~$
Which is a normal prompt (well I've customised mine but the $ means you
have a prompt and it's waiting for input)
Got the prompt... Typed sudo wvdial and connected online, but with the
cursor just flashing @ bottom of screen... Didn't know what to do then... :$
So rebooted, got the prompt again, and then typed apt-get and got a help
list. :| Didn't get any further than that. Umm... :$
OK. Get to this stage again but don't reboot. It sounds like wvdial does
not release you back to the command line... if this is the case you can
background it... (i don't ever use wvdial so this might not work)
there are two alternatives:
alternative A: start wvdial as per normal,
hit ctrl-z and you should get a message like
[2]+ Stopped wvdial
and be returned to the prompt
type "bg" (this lets wvdial keep running in the background)
now follow apt-get instructions as in the other peoples posts to fix kde.
alternative B:
start wvdial as before
hit ctrl-alt-f2 and log in a second time
run apt-get from there
You do indeed need a net connection to use apt-get to install stuff.
Logged in, and then got the :~$ cursor, where the apt-get command was
entered, getting the help list. Umm... :$
The help list just means that apt-get is expecting some parameters (ie
package names) and you haven't provided them.
