Hi all,
I have just installed linux (dual boot with WinXP home) and have a little previous experience with linux but am not an IT professional by any stretch of the imagination.
I chose to install MEPIS as I had previously liked the debian distros over the mandrake/redhat's etc (personal choice.. I like to tutu with my pc.. ;-) ) and it was an easy install and didn't require a large download etc (I still run a 56k modem).
Anyway, everything is going great and all my hardware is working and I have installed the nvidia driver for my video card (GeForce 4 TI series) via apt-get and now I have a fairly insignificant problem that I am having trouble configuring correctly.
In the dreaded windows I run my monitor at a 85 Hz refresh rate which I prefer. In linux the refresh rate defaults to 75 Hz which is okay but I would prefer to change it to 85 Hz.
I am running KDE at 1024 x 768 resolution and my monitor is a Viewsonic E70fb-2. Kernel is 2.6.7 .
In the KDE Control Centre it does not allow me to change the refresh rate to anything other than 70 Hz or 75 Hz in the drop down list.
So I took a look at the XF86Config-4 file and all appears correct and there are two modelines for my display at 1024 x 768 res and I would like to adjust these to suit. Below is the 'Monitor' section of the XF86Config-4 file:

How do I configure this to get my monitor to run on the 1024x768 85 Hz modeline?
Or am I on completely the wrong track? (Which is quite possible)
I have tried adjusting the VertRefresh value inthe above section but to no avail and the above section is the default (i.e none of my changes).
I know this is a fairly minor problem, but I suppose I want to change it to learn about my system more than anything else.
please note: All replies and advice will be acknowledged and tried with thanks and will not incur the wrath of any deity !
Thank you to all in advance.

Hi Craig,
Refrest rates are correct for this monitor. You may want to add an Options "DPMS" line to this section, just to save some money.
The monitor section tells you what the monitor is capable of doing. However it may be your graphics card that is limiting the refresh rate, especially if you're using the rather primitive vesa or vga drivers. Usually, X will set up to use the highest possible combination.
