Hi,
You will not have seen my name here as being new to Linux (playing with
installing mandrake 8 and gentoo).

I have been lurking on the list for a while. Why do I lurk? because the
problems I have are normally the same as someone else has had in the past.
By lurking I see the decussation go to by on the new stuff, try to
understand what they are on about if it is of interest. When I get to play
with the new stuff I have at least seen how someone has tackled a similar
problem.

I have had 20 years of working with windows (all versions), programming in
mainly Pascal(Delphi). It is taking quite a while to find my way around a
Linux box because it is so different as to location and naming of files. As
I live in Temuka (2 hrs from chch) it is not practical to goto meetings in
chch. I have managed to get a number of things running (2 servers -
interbase & cvs) also on my list of things to do are mail, firewall with
proxy, and samba, desktop machine. But by taking my time, being methodical -
recording what I have done as I go if I break something I can go back, or if
I reinstall I can get to the same point quickly. in the process have managed
to pick up enough knowledge to carry out minor administration tasks for a
client on there aix machine.

I have found the gui desktops nice but require more resources than the old
pcs I play with have. the other thing I found with the gui desktops is they
make things so easy when there is a problem you have no clue where to start
and there is usually gaps in what they implement.

The on going problems you seem to have appears you are trying to put the
icing on the cake before checking the cake is the one you want.

the above is pure subjective as your post are very difficult to follow being
sprinkled it allsorts of abstract ideas that don't relate to the problem.

if your posts were clear and concise with a full description of the problem
and what you had tried the quality of advice you receive would improve as
the people trying to assist are not trying to guess what is happening.

Hi,

In trying Linux, it seems that it is an enormous task just to get it set
up nicely, and with all kinds of people giving all kinds of advice, that
leads to where...? Advice that they don't even know if it works, or not.
Rascals! Basically, if it cannot be set up nicely, then forget it! Better
stick with the present system (best stick with the ORIGINAL system). Word of
advice... filter out those who are involved for destructive purposes.
Ultimately, the best is simple living, and high thinking. Those who are on
the side of greed, will only be rewarded with their inevitable destruction,
as greed NEVER pays, nor triumps, ultimately, and fortunately. Wishing well,
always...
