As the ppp link is unaffected by whether you use it or not, nothing being added to the log is expected. What you want to find out now is why the web browsers seemingly don't do much. Run SuSEfirewall stop and see if that helps; if it does, your firewall configuration is blocking a few things. Check whether your name resolution works: dig xtra.co.nz should display a waddle of domains and numbers more or less immediately. Check whether command line ftp works, i.e. ftp to some anonymous ftp repository. Grasping at straws, run umask 022; SuSEconfig as root. Stay on the command line for debugging if you can, the diagnostic output is better than the desktop one (which is non-existant). Does rsync rsync.planetmirror.com:: show anything helpful? As your modem and ppp are working stop chasing the modules tangent. As a rule, never download this sort of driver module from the manufacturer if your distro supplies it, unless you have verified(!) that the distro-supplied one doesn't work.
