Ok its time stamp changed. Ignore that.

Bingo, your internet connection is up and running. You can also check that with ifconfig ppp0, which must display local and peer IP numbers.
previously, attempting to make the connection to a site was what triggered the dailup requestI waited a minute and nothing was added so I fired up firefox and tried
to get to google, nothing was added to the log so I fired up konqueror and tried the same, again nothing was added to the log.
As the ppp link is unaffected by whether you use it or not, nothing being added to the log is expected.
What you want to find out now is why the web browsers seemingly don't do much. Run SuSEfirewall stop and see if that helps; if it does, your firewall configuration is blocking a few things.
no change
Check whether your name resolution works: dig xtra.co.nz should display a waddle of domains and numbers more or less immediately.
Check whether command line ftp works, i.e. ftp to some anonymous ftp repository.
no luck with these, time outs and name resolution failures
Grasping at straws, run umask 022; SuSEconfig as root.
this produced setting /usr/bin/pppd to root:dailout 0755 ( wrong permissions 4755 ) I tried everything again after this with no change.
Stay on the command line for debugging if you can, the diagnostic output
is better than the desktop one (which is non-existant).
Does rsync rsync.planetmirror.com:: show anything helpful?
bash doesn't like rsync
Use wget or similar to test http.
nothing still
so should I go get a different one now ? I'm in no position to say but I don't believe the connection is up, I've had the pc unplugged to use mail from this pc and the modem hasn't made any connection sounds since I plugged it back in.
I clicked thekinternet icon again and it added
pppd[0]: terminating on signal 15
Status is: disconnected
pppd[0] died: pppd received a signal (exit code 5)
All perfectly normal.
As your modem and ppp are working stop chasing the modules tangent.
As a rule, never download this sort of driver module from the manufacturer if your distro supplies it, unless you have verified(!) that the distro-supplied one doesn't work.
