Chances are he had a bad experience with Linux, one of the early versions of Linux that was un-cooperative, and heavy duty to use, and hasnt gone back to see how far Linux has progressed in recent years. Under the circumstances, there are specialist tasks that windows can do, that linux can not yet do, without the help of WINE. That to someone who doesnt WANT to learn about linux, is enough of an excuse for him. He's comfortable with Windows, leave him there.
