Okay. Kelvyn is now the owner of a shiny new Knoppix 3.6 disk.
X does start, but is not vidible. The problem is to do with the agpgart module (I wrote the error message down, but left it with Kelvyn). I told him that hunting this down on Google may help him solve the problem, especially as it seemed to me that Knoppix was running fine: X was starting, KDE was starting - but we just couldn't see it!!! Since the problem is common with all distro's he has tried then I think it is down to funky hardware (an Intel 810 board in a Gateway box). Kelvyn - I might pop round again if you're still stuck. It's too bad you had this problem, and no wonder you're frustrated. At least you can take solace in knowing it's not anything you've done, and well done for persevering. Andy
