The last few times I've made it to a meeting I've brought my laptop just because I'm a geek and have found it needed for a presentation. My laptop (Julia's lappie actually) has always worked fine as long as the projector is already plugged in before I switch it on. I think something in the hardware detects a monitor attached to the external vga port at power-on time. I can't always make it to every meeting, though.
