Apache only (usually) needs to resolve virtual domain names. If you add
these into /etc/hosts, either as a temporary solution, or permanently if
there aren't many of them, then this should speed things up.

That's /etc/hosts on the web server and your local client machine(s), if
they are different. As you can see, where the (s) gets larger, the more a
local dns server makes sense!
