what sort of vpn? pptp? ipsec? (not familiar here with windows based
vpns, except I have done pptp from win 98 --> linux)

try a traceroute, and some tcpdumping. Is there a prticular need to
contact the speedtouch? you shouldn't need to adjust anything there.
