Hi,

I am looking to buy a domain name for a New Zealand company (I am in
Christchurch BTW). I've never done this before, but I think I know what I
am supposed to do:

1) Pick a domain name and check it is not currently used, e.g. foo.co.nz
2) Pay someone once a year to register and maintain the name
3) Pay them some more money, or pay someone else to have a web site
(www.foo.co.nz) and email facilities ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), which will then link
to ISP-provided facilities, or be provided directly.

Is that it? Does anyone have any gotchas I should know? The company owner
is not computer savvy, but I can probably get them to mark their diary once
a year to renew. Do I need to be the 'Technical contact' in the whois
record?

I have found a couple of reasonably priced suppliers, Domainz, Webbase,
Register Direct to name a few. Obviously I can compare the cost of
registration, mail and hosting as like-for-like across suppliers, but I can
not tell much about quality of service or customer satisfaction (and what
else should I be looking for?). If anyone has a favourite hosting company
please let me know. Anything that is for public consumption, please post
here. Private opinions, please post off-list directly to me.

Thanks in advance,

Andy
