Ok: Starting with SuSE 9.2, there is no more personal version. The DVD is as much as you get (the 5 CDs is a bit less than 2/3 as what you get on the DVD). On the bytheby, the personal had no webserver as it was aimed at very beginners, who certainly don't need one. > If I understand it correctly, I can use this to boot sufficient OS on > a LAN PC to enable a network connection to gain access a host on which > the DVD would be running? Yes. Or the DVD copied to harddisk. > I was wondering if there was enough OS on this mini install disk to > enable me to load Apache and run my web server on it. Definitely no apache. The boot iso has sufficient stuff on it to do just that: boot, and connect to another host to fetch the goodies. If you're just starting out with Linux and don't exactly know how to set it up, by far your fastest bet is to boot from CD1 and install a "minimal system" (and ignore all packages which it may want to install but which aren't on CD1). Configure networking and file sharing, crank up yast on the minimal system, change the installation source, and install anything you find still missing. The minimal system doesn't include any graphical applications, so you get the text-console yast. If you install at least one graphical app, all the graphical app client libraries will be installed and you can get yourself a GUI text editor. It's not considered totally safe to have graphical apps on a secure server, but in your case you're better off with them until you're familiar with a non-GUI Linux administration. > I need to ditch W2K as it's a commercial site and it's been > compromised twice since it's been up (2 weeks).
