1. I don't have a nvidia-configure. I do, however, have nvidia-settings. Will this do?We seem to be having issues with low frame-rates with the NVidia GForce FX cards. * The latest NVidia kernel module [1] is loaded correctly. * The NVidia drivers for x.org are loaded correctly: * DRI is off, as it should be, and * The OpenGL libraries are correctly installed, the symbolic-inks are pointing to the correct files, and "ldd" is reporting correct linking for OpenGL programs. * X starts and runs without error. * OpenGL programs run without error. * The NVidia cards are configured correctly; most importantly ârefresh on VSyncâ is *O*F*F* (according to "nvidia-configure").
However, despite the correctly running goodness the frame rate for OpenGL programs ("glxgears" reports â 544 fps) is a lot slower than the older MX cards ("glxgears" reports â 1,000 fps). Other things to note: * The poor performance is with both 4x and 8x AGP slots, * The video RAM that is reported by the system is correct, * All parts of the system (including HAL, the PCI bus, and the drivers) are correctly identifying the cards, and * After doing a Google it appears that the problem is distribution neutral.
Does anyone have any ideas about what the problem may be?

Some responses to typical replies. 1. âYou should have used Gentoo/Debian/SuSE/Mandrake/FreeBSD/ââ You are not being helpful. As I said before, the problem seems to be common to all distributions. 2. âYou should have used ATI cards rather than NVidia, which suxâ You are not being helpful. We have the hardware, we need to make it work. 3. â"glxgears" is not a performance measurement toolâ I know, but it nicely shows the problem.

2. Glxgears runs at 150fps or 500 fps when minimised when 'Sync to VBlank' is disabled, and
75/75fps when enabled.

Does the monitor have any effect on this? I'm obviously suffering from the same problem as you... but there's no pdoplem with the display to my tired old eyes!
