I'm with Steve on this.
My server is running debian stable on an old AcerNote 970 which has a pentium 166MMX processor and 48M of Ram, but has been upgraded to a 20Gb hard dive. The CD Drive is busted so I installed the system using a boot floppy and then a network install. The screen which was highly intermittent finally packed up at the end of the install, so I have to plug in an external monitor every couple of months or so when I need to shut it down and reboot it. Otherwise I do my administration remotely using PuTTY and upload files using scp or ftp.
Its running Apache v1.3, php4 and MySQL3 (whatever the latest versions in debian stable are) and an exim mail server but no GUI.
I run 3 named virtual host web sites (2 for my own nefarious purposes, and one for the local judo club http://canamju.dnsalias.org if you're interested)
The notebook cost me $40 (with a 2Gb hard drive) and the new Hard drive another $60.
I also have a backup server which has debian testing with Apache2 and the latest versions of PHP4 and MySQL running on a Toshiba Satellite 205CDS again with a busted CD drive. This machine has an original Pentium100, 40Mb of RAM, but the original 800Mb hard drive has been replaced with a 5Gb drive.
The system was installed on this using the floppy/network install version of the new debian installer (Release Candidate 1) and then aptitude to install the applications it all worked like a charm.
Regards, Trevor

Trevor,
Steve suggested a Debian text based distro. This seems to me like a good idea as I won't need all sorts of applications loaded and a gui etc, just Apache and the pages.
I would probably be out of my depth with it but hey what the hell.
What are you using with your Apache 1.3 setup ?
Is there something that would run on primitive hardware?
