When someone was ready to the would set up their gentoo config so that they knew to get their binaries from http://myip/gentoo/packages/p4/All where p4 could be i686, p3, p4, athlonxp etc. then they would type something like emerge -gk kde and a great wad of packages was sucked down and installed. Bandwidth did not seem to be a problem, everyone was ready to do that part at different times. there was very little contention problem, but remember that after downloading each package there is a pause while it is untarred and any post install scripts are run, so another box can sneak some bandwidth at that stage.
