As luck would have it, I just bought such a thing. $26 for an external USB 2.5" laptop hard drive enclosure, then as much as you can afford for the drive itself from www.flashcards.co.nz. These enclosures are appearing quite widely now from a number of suppliers. I chose the Flashcards one as it does not require an external power supply (and the price was good). I have tried it with Windows 98SE, XP, and Linux (Debian 3.0 (woody) with 2.4.18 kernel). If cost is really critical you would be better with a 3.5" external enclosure. They are bigger (of course) and usually come with a power supply. The drives are much cheaper (and faster) for the same capacity.
