For many people that might be good, but if we follow this we would probably end up with something like a mac. The strong side of GNU/Linux is that it is fully configurable and that those people who know what they are doing can get the most out of their boxes. The best would be something that combines simplicity and flexibility. Neither apple nor windows nor the GNU/Linux community have achieved that yet. I think GNU/Linux is the only operating system that is on the right track because the GNU/Linux programmers don't have to remove all the flexibility because they don't want the users to use only their software. (Just look at the combination windows & IE/media player or apple hardware & mac OS)

I agree. I think the idea computer OS for many home users (ie, my parents) would simply be mozilla on a kiosk style machine. A machine they can turn on & have boot in a second or two, and turn off without having to "power down".
I haven't seen this style of "computer" in NZ, but if I could buy one for say $300, I would and it would be going to my parents.
