Computer Science dept at Canterbury has the "Star" course that
Year 13 students sign up to do the stage one computing course
here. (On Linux boxes to get the thread back to group business :-) )
Use Java for  the stage1 language.

My son is playing around, at school, with C++ quite effectively. Being "taught programming", as an official subject, unfortunately not.
