otoh, there is also the school of thought which posits that in order to really fully understand what's going on inside the machine one should start as close as possible to the silicon, or a mimic thereof. Don Knuth and his [M]MIX system is an example. I tend to agree to some extent with this argument.

I can't imagine recommending assembly language as a first step for a potential programmer.
