assembler is not close enough. in highschool we played around with actual logic gates, build addidion machines with and/or gates and the like. that gives an idea of the real workings deep deep inside. everything else can be extrapolated from that so you can skip random steps up to your favourite programming language...
So then how about:
When I was a kid I played with nuts and bolts. Everything else can be extrapolated from that so you can skip random steps up to your favourite engineering structure...
