TU Darmstadt's library has introduced electronic lending of books in pdf
format. The files can be downloaded and are usable for 4 days (before
presumably bitrot sets in). The scheme is based on acroread 6, of which
Adobe is obviously not going to release a Linux version. This isn't the
first university implementing this scheme, and I guess won't be the
last. This sucks!

Will access.adobe.com convert it to html for you? I was going to suggest ths as a serious alternative, but after leaving it running overnight trying to convert a 1.5MB pdf to html, maybe it's only paying lipservice, rather than being a real alternative.
