There was a recent post to NZLUG headed "Ubuntu DNS tip" - basically the tip was to disable ipv6 to dramatically improve dns times.
Sorry, different problem. I'm not seeing any name resolution delays, the failure is instantaneous.
How does one disable this ipv6 cr*p? A line install net-pf-10 /bin/true added to /etc/modbrobe.conf(.local) doesn't seem to make a lot of difference.

If you don't have an IPv6-enabled network, disable KDE's IPv6 checking by adding the following line to /etc/env.d/99kde-env:
KDE_NO_IPV6 = 1
