Just to clear a point up, you say,qtparted would only give a 500mb partition on a FAT drive (not NTFS)?
That was all I managed. I experimented with various sizes above that, without success. The same result was achieved with the parted interface provided during the Ubuntu installation process.
I formatted that partition as ext3 instead.
