As well as Linux you should also look at the BSDs.
Many people think that they are superior to Linux for that sort of task.

portage, and apt-get.

You need a superior updater that can be used over the wire.
The above can do that. So It's either Gentoo or Debian-Stable.
FreeBSD-4.X is very much in the running too imho.

Problem with Debian Stable is that they are always stuck in bygone ages.
