Yes. Your method does restore users' dirs verbatim, that's as you need
to do it. Whether all the files in those dirs then work well with newer
versions of the software they were created by is another question.
That's life though, you upgrade your desktop distro and keep your $HOME,
and the problem is the same.

I've copied that several times, it's easy.   find|xargs grep  to find the
file, the config file's content is self-explanatory.
