the gateway (254) firewall may be dropping pings on the internal interface to the lappie (1). Something like- drop pings $IPTABLES -A INPUT -i $INTERNAL -p icmp --icmp-type echo-request -j DROP drop pongs $IPTABLES -A INPUT -i $INTERNAL -p icmp --icmp-type echo-reply -j DROP take a look at the iptables script and change icmp echo's to ACCEPT for the internal network. hth, keith.
