I know ImageMagick well. If convert was working I wouldn't have asked
about gimp (I thought I'd mentioned that). There's a bunch of fits
images here which display shows as black eagle on black background, but
they're fine in gimp. Convert uses the same code for reading as display.

You proved that it'll read your kind of jpegs, but unfortunately that
doesn't necessarily mean much for reading my fits.

Actually it's somewhat funny - fits doesn't seem to have absolute pixel
values, so they need to be scaled. gimp gets it right in the default
setting, IM needs some serious fiddling, and it doesn't seem to be
straightforward. Have a play if you're interested:

A non-X11 gimp would still be handy though.
