The Gigabit LAN points to there being a suitable network already present.
It's been a vary long time since I came across a lan that linux didn't
support - except for early D-link gigabit adapters which lock up.
I was thinking of going gigabit about a year ago but I abandoned the idea because it would have required expensive upgrades of my server to make it worthwhile.
In the process I found a webpage somewhere that had some comparative tests between a number of different gigE chipsets. The actual transfer speeds achievable varied widely as some cards required a lot more CPU processing due to shortcomings in the hardware. The upshot was basically that you get what you pay for. I think one of the Intel chipsets looked pretty good at the time. Realtek (as used in DSE cards) wasn't so good.
As for cables - how long do you want it... I've got about 200M of cat 5e
at home (:
I spent most of my weekend in the roof space running cat5. I'm still sore enough to recommend going wireless :)
