Hi all,

This afternoon my nautilus (Debian with Gnome) crashed and thereafter
continually crashed even after a reboot of the PC. I could use the
session manager to kill nautilus (to get it out of a spawn, crash,
repawn, crash loop) and I tried to capture some useful debug but to no
avail. However, any other account on the PC had no problems with
nautilus. Despite it being obviously a specific user issue I ran
"dpkg-reconfigure nautilus", which did not fix the problem.

I deleted the dir ~/.nautilus and some other ~/.gnome files. This did
not help. In the end I resorted to strace (which is always a last gasp
effort for me). strace told me that a file that it opened shortly, but
not immediately, before each crash was ~/CA0X6LBS.swf. I deleted that
file and everything worked!

I am posting this here so that it is archived on the internet for some
other poor chump who has the same problem. The file will be different
but strace, and probably the file date will help you find it. I guess
that my problem might have had something to do with previewing a
shockwave flash (swf) file. Who knows?

Michael.
